Focusing on strengthening the foundations ensures a solid structure — and the same applies to our body. Eating the correct nutrients keeps our bodily systems in good working order, helping us fight off viral infections at home. The past few months have seen an explosion of research exploring the link between nutrition, especially adherence to the Mediterranean diet, and its ability to protect the public from Covid-19 infection severity.

What is the secret behind the Mediterranean diet?

In short, the Mediterranean diet contains 4 main food groups:

  • Unsaturated fats including olive oil
  • Wholegrains (bread, pasta, polenta, quinoa etc.)
  • Fresh fruit, vegetables, legumes and nuts
  • Protein — meat (a weekly portion of oily fish and poultry, and a monthly portion of red meat), eggs and dairy (cheese and yoghurt)

Add in a glass of wine and you’re good to go.
